Montego Bay to Ocho Rios: Scenic North Coast Drive Guide 2026

Updated February 2026 · 7 min read

The drive from Montego Bay to Ocho Rios along Jamaica's north coast is one of the most scenic routes on the island. In just 1.5 hours, you'll pass through fishing villages, drive alongside turquoise waters, and arrive at the home of Dunn's River Falls — one of Jamaica's most famous attractions.

This guide covers everything you need to know: the best route, road conditions, must-see stops, and practical tips for making the most of your Montego Bay to Ocho Rios road trip in 2026.

Quick Route Summary

Distance: Approximately 100 km (62 miles)

Drive Time: 1.5 to 2 hours depending on traffic

Route: A1 North Coast Highway via Falmouth, Discovery Bay, Runaway Bay

Road Condition: Excellent — newly upgraded highway for most of the route

Fuel: Gas stations in Falmouth, Discovery Bay, and Runaway Bay

The Route: Step by Step

Head east from Montego Bay on the A1 North Coast Highway. The first stretch through Ironshore and Rose Hall passes some of Montego Bay's famous resort areas. You'll see signs for the Rose Hall Great House — worth a visit on its own if you have time.

After Rose Hall, the road opens up beautifully. You'll pass through Falmouth, the well-preserved Georgian capital of Trelawny parish, roughly 30 minutes from Montego Bay. From Falmouth, continue east through Duncans, Discovery Bay, and Runaway Bay — all charming north coast towns with roadside food stalls and stunning sea views.

The final stretch into Ocho Rios brings you past Dunn's River Falls on your left. Ocho Rios town centre is a busy cruise ship port, so expect more traffic here during the day when ships are docked.

Top Stops Along the Way

1. Rose Hall Great House

Just 15 minutes east of Montego Bay, this famous 18th-century plantation house is one of Jamaica's most popular historical attractions. Guided tours tell the legendary story of Annie Palmer, the "White Witch of Rose Hall."

2. Falmouth Historic District

Falmouth has one of the best-preserved collections of Georgian architecture in the Caribbean. The town square, courthouse, and waterfront are worth a quick walk. The famous Luminous Lagoon is nearby — take a night boat tour to see the water glow.

3. Columbus Park, Discovery Bay

A free, open-air museum where Christopher Columbus reportedly first landed in Jamaica. Small but interesting, with cannons, a water wheel, and old sugar-making equipment overlooking the beautiful bay.

4. Dunn's River Falls

The main event for most visitors. This 180-foot cascading waterfall is iconic — you can climb it with a guide while water rushes around you. Arrive early (before 10 AM) to avoid the cruise ship crowds. Entrance is approximately $25 USD for adults.

5. Blue Hole (Secret Falls)

About 20 minutes south of Ocho Rios in the hills, the Blue Hole offers cliff jumping, rope swinging, and swimming in a stunning natural pool. Less crowded and more adventurous than Dunn's River Falls.

Road Conditions & Tips

The north coast highway between Montego Bay and Ocho Rios is in excellent condition — much of it has been recently upgraded. It's a smooth, well-paved two-lane road with good signage throughout. The drive is straightforward and well-suited for visitors driving in Jamaica for the first time.

💡 Pro Tip: Check the cruise ship schedule for Ocho Rios. On days when ships are docked, the town and Dunn's River Falls will be significantly more crowded.

🍗 Food Stop: Scotchies in Falmouth (or the original near Montego Bay) serves some of the best jerk chicken and pork in Jamaica. A must-stop.

🕐 Timing: Leave by 8 AM to arrive at Dunn's River Falls before the cruise ship passengers. You'll have a much better experience.
